In April, the only German Umbraco festival returns for the sixth time.
Excited what it has in store for you? Then take a look at our session schedule!

26 April: Pre-Party on the Eve of UFD

Frankfurter Skyline

starting at 7 pm

Admission Free for Ticket Holders: the Pre-Party

As every year, the German Umbraco festival kicks off with a pre-festival party at the byte5 office. Frankfurt's modern East end – which is famous for the new Euopean Central Bank building – has been home to us since 2016. We invite all holders of a festival ticket to our office on fifth floor of East 114 (address: Hanauer Landstraße 114) to spend the evening with us and our international guests and have the perfect kick off for UFD18. With a view on Frankfurt's well-known skyline, of course.

27 April: Sessions on Festival Day

Lobby des Westendcarrees

starting at 8 am: registration

After you've successfully got to the venue, Westendcarree, thanks to our tips on how to get there, you register in the ground-level lobby. Afterwards you can either hang out there or get acquainted with some Umbracians in the area infront of the sessions rooms. At 9 o'clock your day of sessions starts: UFD18 is about to begin!

First Coffee Break

Kaffeepause I

10.30 to 11.00 am

Now that you've taken some refreshment, you can begin your day full of interesting talks. In the first half of the day, you can always chose between two sessions. The first two talks are given by Mads and Rune from the Umbraco headquarter and Dennis and Marcel from UFD host byte5.

Track 1 & 2

Headless Umbraco on Umbraco Cloud

Rune Strand & Mads Rasmussen (Umbraco HQ)

Headless is all the buzz these days and the Umbraco D-Team is working on an easy way to get started with Umbraco as a Headless CMS on Umbraco Cloud. We want to have a first look at what we can expect from a Headless Umbraco project on Umbraco Cloud – specifically how it differs from “normal” Umbraco projects, how easy it is to get started with and what the benefits are.

Rune (above) & Mads (below)

11.00 to 12.00 am

Track 3

Automated Deployments with Umbraco

Dennis Zille & Marcel Wege (byte5)

In this session, we'll give insights into strategies for automated deployments. What's this motivation behind CI/CD? Which different possibilities do you have? What do you need to pay attention to? We want to answer these questions using demonstrations.

Dennis (above) & Marcel (below)

11.00 to 12.00 am

Scalable High-Traffic Solutions with Umbraco and Azure

Marcin Zajkowski (The Cogworks)

How many UU hits do you consider a "high traffic" website? Is 1 mln UU/day enough? Will your (Umbraco) site handle it out of the box? During this talk, we'll find answers to these and many more questions.

12.15 am to 1.15 pm

Ninja-Level Umbraco Forms (and Some Newsletter Studio)

Markus Johansson (Enkel Media)

This session will be a deep dive into the time-saving package Umbraco Forms. We’ll have a look at some of the built in features and we’ll also go through how to extend it to fit custom requirements. In this session, we’ll create a custom workflow to build a “double opt in” feature for Newsletter Studio. Expect some slides and some code as well. And maybe some bad Swedish jokes.

12.15 am to 1.15 pm

Time for a break! After having listened to so many interesting talks, your belly needs filling and your brain wants some fresh air. Use the one-hour lunch break to have some tasty food and think back over what you've heard so far, talk to other Umbracians or just relax a bit before the sessions continue.

Lunch Break

1.15 to 2.15 pm

Now that you're hopefully stuffed from all the good food, you can start into the second half of festival day where you can pick one of three sessions for each time slot. Topics range from tech-heavy to trends to more general topics – there's something for everyone!

Track 1

See The Light: What are <picture> & @srcset and How Can You Use Them in Umbraco Projects

Jeavon Leopold (Crumpled Dog Design)

This session will be a brief look at the history of the implementation of responsive images for websites, the hacks and the standards and everything in-between. I will also discuss why responsive images should be standard for all website development projects and how developers can easily implement them when using Umbraco.

2.15 to 3.15 pm

Track 2

A Tour of The Tour

Dave Woestenborghs (Colours)

In this talk, I will guide you through the new tour functionality in Umbraco 7.8 and show you how to get the most out of it.

2.15 to 3.15 pm

Track 3

Umbraco: How It Needs to Change to Survive

Janus Boye (J. Boye)

It is incredible to think back to 2005 when the first open source edition of Umbraco saw the light of day. Youtube was released the same year, Amazon was still mostly a bookstore, iPhones arrived in 2007, blockchain was invented in 2008, iPads came in 2010, Wifi became reliable in Danish trains circa 2015 and chatbots was the buzzword of 2017 alongside artificial intelligence. It was really a fundamentally different time. Content management was about managing pages, humans were the only consumers of content and CMS was something that was very difficult to install. In the struggle for life, it is all about survival of the fittest to paraphrase Darwin. With his background as industry analyst, consultant and current role as community lead and host, Janus will dust off his crystal ball to take a look into the future of web content management.

2.15 to 3.15 pm

How I Fell in Love with VueJS

Matt Brailsford (Outfield Digital)

Most front-end developers will have a JS framework of choice, one they just love to work with, and for me that framework is VueJs. In this talk, I'll show you how I came to discover and then slowly fall in love with this simple yet powerful framework, and why VueJS might just be a perfect fit for your development team too. If you've never heard of VueJS, or have, and wondered what it's all about, then this talk is for you.

3.30 to 4.30 pm

commercetools+Umbraco: Functioning and Advantages

Marcel Wege & Sören Deger (byte5)

In this session, Marcel and Sören will explain the functioning of commercetools. They will also talk about the advantages of working with this toolset. Using examples, the two will show you how to integrate it best with Umbraco.

Marcel (above) & Sören (below)

3.30 to 4.30 pm

Infuse Some AI into Umbraco

Henk Boelman (Heroes)

With the rise of machine learning, affordable artificial intelligence is now available through API's. In this talk, I will introduce you to the world of Microsoft Cognitive Services API's and show you how to integrate them with Umbraco. We dive into topics like computer vision, facial recognition, custom vision and project Prague. With just a few lines of code, we will infuse some AI into Umbraco. Join this session and don't get left behind in these exciting times.

3.30 to 4.30 pm

Before the last sessions of the day start in a minute, use the coffee break to take in all you've heard so far.

Second Coffee Break

Kaffeepause II

4.30 to 5.00 pm

The last three talks are given by Henk, Carole and byte5 duo Marcel and Sören. Which one will you attend?

Go Live Is Just Day 1

Carole Rennie Logan (Equator)

I will be discussing a project I have worked on for 2 years showing the lifecycle of a project after it goes live rather than the initial project build. Basically, I will be discussing that go live is just day 1 of a site’s life and I want to show the decisions and challenges of maintaining a project while adding some innovative features… all using Umbraco of course.

5.00 to 6.00 pm
